I came with high expectations, having heard that this is a well-established spot. I was really looking forward to it, but the food tasted quite average.

The seafood tofu casserole was packed with ingredients but was not that impressed with the taste. The old hen soup was okay, and the stir-fried pea shoots were standard, though a bit salty.

While the food was ordinary, I really enjoyed the ambiance and decoration at this restaurant. Also, their waitresses were very warm and friendly.

During our three-day visit to Chicago, we came across Lao Sze Chuan on Michigan Avenue. As fans of Sichuan cuisine and having dined at other locations of the same name, we decided to give it a try without hesitation. Upon arrival, we noticed that the dining room is located upstairs, accessible by elevator, which unfortunately had an unpleasant odor—a reminder that we were in Chicago, not Boston.

The atmosphere inside was pleasant, though not overly fancy. We ordered our usual favorites, and a robot promptly delivered our food. The cold appetizer was enjoyable, but the special chili chicken was disappointing—it wasn't crispy as we expected. In fact, it wasn’t crispy at all. While we’re unsure whether a non-crispy version is more authentic, we definitely prefer the crispy chili chicken. The vegetable dish was tasty but a bit pricey.

Overall, it was an okay visit. If you go, hopefully, you’ll find dishes that suit your tastes better than ours did.

This place made my top 3 in Sichuan ciusine list. Traditional dishes were immaculate seasoned just right and spicy to order. Great staff made us feel welcome and at ease.

Menu is quiet large and staff was knowledgeable on each item. Great wine list for the ryoe of restaurant.

Located on 4th floor of Shoping Center (google map took us below the building)

To get to the restaurant from Michigan Ave, you enter a small lobby and take an elevator up. The Lao Szechuan at this location is different from the one in Chinatown. The dried chili chicken here isn’t as crispy or spicy, though the flavor is still good. It could use more peppercorns and heat.
In today’s inflated world, the lunch special was a great deal at $13, which included a soda, the chicken, rice, and a spring roll. I’ll definitely return when I have cravings. The service was quick—about 10 minutes, which wasn’t bad at all. I ate half and reheated the rest in the air fryer the next day, and it tasted just as good!

The food here was very authentic! I thought it definitely had a Sichuan taste. The food had a bit of a wait (~30 min) as we came during peak dinner time, but the food was worth the wait!

Pictured below is the Stir Fried Slice Duck, Sour Pickled Chili w. Fish Fillet, and Sichuan Ice Power dessert.

I would not recommend the stir fried slice duck as it felt like 3/4 of the dish was duck fat and duck skin. The sour pickled chili w. fish filet and Sichuan ice power dessert were amazing though!!

I came to this restaurant after landing in Chicago. I was hyped since I was told this was a great restaurant for Chinese food in the area. I ordered the peking duck and the stirfry beans. The waitress talked us into ordering this spicy pork dish as well. The peking duck was just ok, nothing too exceptional for peking duck. The star of the meal would be the stirfry bean which was salty and garlicky, just the way I like it. The spicy pork dish lacked any flavoring. I regret adding on this dish. It was extremely greasy/salty and somehow still lack flavor. It was hard for my boyfriend and I to eat through this dish.

This Lao Sze Chuan is on the 4th floor food court of Nordstroms on Michigan Ave. A non-descript place but it serves one of the best Peking Duck in Chicago. They serve the duck with the thin crepe/pancake not the Bao buns like all other places in Chicago that serve Peking Duck. My Beijing girlfriends and her family said the duck reminded them of being home in Beijing. The rest of their extensive menu is also incredibly authentic and not "Americanized". Kidneys with wood ear mushrooms are another very hard to find dish in anywhere outside of China, even Chinatown does not have these dishes. This is a hidden gem in right in the middle of Michigan Ave.
